Optometry / Ophthalmology
The Ophthalmology Service provides treatment for glaucoma, diabetic eye disease, "no stitch" cataract surgery, and Laser surgery for glaucoma and diabetic eye disease.
Mission
The mission of the Optometry Service is to enable vision readiness and conservation through high quality, complex, patient-centered eyecare services for our Joint Service Members; in association with comprehensive and multidisciplinary eyecare for dependents, retirees and other eligible Tricare beneficiaries.

Eligibility
- All TRICARE eligible Service Members (Both locations)
- TRICARE eligible Dependent and Retirees, ages 5-64 years (EENT Clinic only)
Services Provided
- Routine comprehensive eye exams
- Order military eyewear & eyewear for eligible Retirees
- Military Vision Physicals (Airborne, Separation, Submarine, Commissioning, etc.)
- by appointment only (Booked at Huber Clinic front desk)
- For Aviation (Flight) Physicals, need to schedule as a full eye exam
- Provide acute eyecare consultation to Emergency Room and other clinics
- Provide training for unit Vision Readiness Screeners
- Provides Vision Conservation oversight for FT Gordon Installation
Walk-In Services
- Spectacle ordering, pick-up, and repair/adjustment
Comprehensive Primary Eye Care
- Comprehensive vision and eye health assessments including prescriptions for glasses.
- Evaluation and management for eye diseases and injuries such as glaucoma, keratoconus, dry eyes, conjunctivitis, keratitis, blepharitis, corneal abrasions etc.
Frequently Asked Questions:
Q: How often do I need an eye exam if I wear glasses?
A: Routine eye exams are recommended every 1-2 years unless otherwise directed by your eye doctor. Military eyeglasses and inserts can be ordered up to 2 years off a valid prescription.
Q: Do I need a referral?
A: No, you do not need a referral to be seen at Optometry. Call Central Appointment line 1-706-787-7300.
Q: Can I get contact lenses?
A: Contact lenses are not a TRICARE covered benefit. Our contact lens policy is a courtesy program to existing contact lens patients who need a prescription renewal and is subject to readiness requirements and availability. If you are an existing contact lens wearer, and interested in a prescription renewal, please bring the contact lens information (boxes, blister packs, expired prescription) and a pair of your pre-existing contact lenses with you (if available) to your exam. No initial fitting services available for first time contact lens patients. The military does not issue non-mission related contact lenses (patients must buy them out of pocket).
Q: Where do I update my MEDPROS?
A: MEDPROS vision screening is a unit function- annual vision screening requirement for MEDPROS can be done at your unit or at the DDEAMC monthly readiness day (second Thursday of the month at SRP site-NRP 322). If your unit does not have vision screeners, your command team can contact the optometry service at Connelly clinic for the training.
