Laboratory Animal Service

About

The function of the Laboratory Animal Service is to facilitate the ethical use of animals in basic biomedical research and scholarly activity. The department maintains laboratory support staff including a veterinarian to assist with the care and use of laboratory animals and to assist with protocol development, protocol execution, and publication development.

Facilities

The Department of Clinical Investigation is one of the few military laboratories to be equipped with a vivarium capable of housing both small and large animals. A laboratory animal surgical suite is also available as well as state of the art anesthesia machines and standard surgical equipment. The location of this facility in building 38705 (a 5-minute drive from the main hospital) allows the development of collaborative training and research involving both the laboratory staff and practicing physicians, nurses, and surgical technicians.

Personnel

The laboratory animal service is staffed with a laboratory animal veterinarian, two surgical technicians, and an institutional animal care and use committee (IACUC) administrator. The effective and ethical use of laboratory animals the top priorities for the staff.

IACUC

DDEAMC maintains an active IACUC. All protocols requiring animal use must be reviewed and approved by both the SRC and the IACUC prior to execution.
