Education

Transitional Year

The Transitional Year provides a broad-based program of Graduate Medical Education (GME) in multiple clinical disciplines designed to facilitate the choice of and preparation for a specific specialty, including specialties requiring a year of fundamental clinical education as a prerequisite.  The program is in full compliance with the requirements of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).  The Transitional Year Residency Program at Dwight David Eisenhower Army Medical Center (DDEAMC) is designed to fill the educational needs of medical graduates who fall within one of the following groups:

  • Those who have chosen a career specialty for which the categorical program in Graduate Medical Education has, as a prerequisite, one year of fundamental clinical education, which contains certain specific experiences for the development of desired skills.
  • Those who are planning to serve in public health organizations or in the military as general medical officers (GMO).
  • Those medical graduates who desire a broader base of clinical experience initially than is provided by the GME program of their chosen specialty.
  • Those who desire one year of fundamental clinical education before entering administrative medicine or research.
The core curriculum of the Transitional Year (consisting of rotations in internal medicine, general surgery, family medicine, gynecology, pediatrics, trauma, ICU/critical care, and emergency medicine) is required for all residents.  Several elective options are available, with guidance provided by the program director, based on individual career goals.  Each resident is required to formulate and present a research project prior to completion of the training year.  Other requirements include evidence-based medicine journal club, simulation/practical skills labs, quality improvement/process improvement activities, didactic lectures and case study exercises.  This combination of required rotations and broad range of elective opportunities provides the breadth and depth of training required for various practice settings.

Sponsorship of the Transitional Year Program is provided by the Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, and General Surgery residency programs.  The program is designed to meet the same standards of high quality graduate medical education offered by the categorical residency programs at Eisenhower Army Medical Center, as well as other residency programs throughout the United States.
